Lando Norris has signed a contract extension with McLaren F1 that will keep him with the team through at least the 2030 season, the automaker announced on Saturday. The deal, reported by ESPN’s Laurence Edmondson, includes an option for a multiyear extension that could push the partnership beyond 2030. This marks the second time in four years Norris has agreed to a long-term commitment with the Silver Arrows.
Stability on the Track
McLaren will now have Norris and Oscar Piastri under contract together for at least two more seasons. Piastri signed his own extension in March 2025, running through at least 2028, though he retains an opt-out clause since he was outside the top five in the standings at the summer break. Norris most recently extended his deal two years ago to run through “at least” the end of the 2026 season, with no public indication of friction or interest in leaving.
Contract stability is often a luxury in Formula 1, where drivers frequently switch teams for better opportunities. The fact that both Norris and Piastri are staying provides a clear roadmap for the team’s driver lineup, which helps with development planning and sponsorship negotiations. It also signals to the team’s partners that the core of the racing operation will remain intact for the foreseeable future, potentially reducing the risk associated with major engineering overhauls.

A Championship-Winning Season
Despite a slow start to the 2026 season, Norris has rebounded with strong recent results. He secured back-to-back wins in Hungary and the Netherlands to climb the standings. A.K. Antonelli and George Russell are the only other drivers with multiple wins so far this year.
Norris won his first career F1 championship in 2025, claiming seven race victories and finishing with 423 points. He edged Max Verstappen by two points in what was the closest points race since Lewis Hamilton beat Felipe Massa by one point in 2008. Since making his F1 debut in 2019, Norris has won 13 races and collected 48 podiums.
Norris originally joined McLaren in 2017 as part of the driver development programme. He served as a reserve driver the following year before officially signing with the team in 2019. The announcement comes just ahead of his return to competition, as he will compete in his first race since the extension on September 6 for the Italian Grand Prix. The event will air at 9 a.m. ET on Apple TV.
